Why do clerks in stores or shops in the UK mostly just ring you up and bag your item and say nothing really>?

Mainly because they are mundane low paid jobs, but of course not all customer service people in UK are like this, I guess the ones you've encountered are, but I've spoke to some very friendly people in shops and on the phone!
